Why Worship Matters

Worshiping through song is a regular practice of the body of Christ. When we gather on Sundays, we worship God through song. When our students gather every Wednesday night, they enjoy another time of corporate worship. This shows that we clearly value the opportunity to sing together to our Lord. But have you ever wondered why we worship?

Why Worship?

The reason is that worship is discipleship. See, discipleship is not just studying the Bible or gathering at a coffee shop. It’s not limited to one-on-one meetings or learning in a Small Group. When you worship through song, you are being discipled and are discipling others.

Ephesians 5:19-21 says, “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Paul is saying that when we sing together, we are serving one another. How? In the very act of worship, we:

1. Remind each other that God wants our heart, not just our actions

Worship is an outpouring of our heart. It is a choice to submit to God and to give him all of who we are.

2. Rehearse the gospel as truth

We don’t sing random songs. We sing about Jesus. When we worship, we seek to remind ourselves that the gospel is true, even if we don’t feel like it is. This is critical because there are going to be times when you don’t “feel” like the gospel is true or you are beaten down with discouragement. There is great power in rehearsing the truth through song with other believers.

This is why we worship and why it is so important for our students to worship. I hope you will be encouraged in your own worship and will encourage your student in theirs as well.
